Zion Nat'l Park, Utah

From the Grand Canyon, will drove north to southern Utah and over to Zion National Park. This park has desert terrain and huge, sculpted rock formations. As you enter the southern entrance, you climb an elevation to about 5,600 feet when you come upon a mile long, totally dark tunnel. We had to pay money to be "escorted" through the tunnel!! Escorted meaning, they closed traffic on the other side to allow US to drive down the middle, insuring our RV would make clearance. This tunnel was built in 1930 when cars were smaller, and fewer in number. Pretty wild! But then after the tunnel, we descended a 5-percent grade through six switchbacks, with no guardrails! Good thing the sights were spectacular, to take my mind off Andy's driving. I believe he was also white-knuckled!
The temperature this afternoon was around 65 degrees, so we decided to spend the night in the park campground. Once we set up camp, we drove to the Zion Canyon floor, a gorge being carved through strangely colored sandstones and shale by the Virgin River. This canyon is about a half-mile deep and a half-mile wide. Spotted some wild life, mountain sheep, fat turkeys and friendly deer. In 2001, two young children were attacked by some deer. One child was bitten in the neck, the other was knocked down and stomped on. Evidently, they were trying to get food from them. This is way we don't feed wildlife.
